Working with the client and local authority we came up with a development framework for the centre of Sittingbourne. Originally a market town that later became an industrial centre, we were inspired by the the descriptions of the close connections, in pre-industrial times, between the High Street and the countryside. From these observations we came up with a masterplan to develop Sittingbourne into a garden town where green spaces will be introduced to form a new public realm.
Our strategy, proposing a landscaped route through the town, created the opportunity to cross the railway, via a green bridge, to reconnect the town centre to the surrounding countryside. This idea also informed the concept behind the proposed new buildings, where the landscaping will continue with the green roofscapes. Along this new route clearly defined public spaces will be incorporated, including a newly developed and landscaped town square.
