Reading, United Kingdom
This project, completed for Hammerson, continues to be held up as an example of excellence for urban regeneration to other towns and cities. Our vision for the scheme was to create a public space, defined by the River Kennet and the new buildings, on what was previously a run down and inaccessible brownfield site. Our aim was to make a significant contribution to the town that would be of lasting value to the people of Reading.
The design emphasis was on creating a memorable sense of place, incorporating restaurants, cafes, shops, a cinema and a public art scheme, working with seven artists, supported by the Art’s Council. Now over twenty years old the scheme has won numerous awards, including the government awarded Beacon Status for City Centre Regeneration.
