A key element of our work on this project was understanding how to design to minimise the impact on the railway operations. Working closely with Network Rail, Birmingham City Council and MACE we developed the design for Grand Central and it’s integration into the station redevelopment project.
Understanding and managing pedestrian flow to avoid congestion and provide a safe environment, providing easy orientation and clear wayfinding, accommodating diversity and understanding and working with industry specific legislative standards were key considerations in this complex project.
Our brief expanded to help develop the concept design for the new atrium roof, to realise the original vision created by AZPA Architects. This multi-million pound project was constructed over a period of five years with the station remaining fully operational throughout. The scheme has won numerous awards.
