This major extension to the MetroCentre in Gateshead creates the new two level Red Mall with a further 27 large retail units and a 180,000 ft² Debenhams department store, forming the new anchor at this end of the Centre.
The total retail area of the extension is 340,000 ft². The elevations of the extension have been designed to provide a significant new presence which includes a striking piece of public artwork by a local artist, on the corner of the three storey department store.
An integral part of the overall Haskoll design was the inclusion of two specific public art projects to capture the public’s imagination and to create a sense of place and community ownership.
Gateshead artist, Christine Constant, produced three separate ceramic murals. Working over two years, she carried out tile painting workshops, enabling all age groups to participate and bring their personal impressions of the region together.
"Look Out" is a work of art designed by local artist, Cate Watkinson, portraying the enjoyment of shopping and clearly visible from the A1 road, a beacon on top of the new Debenhams store.
Along with other transport infrastructure initiatives coordinated by Haskoll at the MetroCentre, this new state-of-the-art transport interchange features a fully heated and real time information fed bus station contained within a sleek and modern envelope.
