This design repositions Abbey Wood from a car dominated destination to a vibrant pedestrian and community orientated centre, enabling major new lettings to be achieved by the client, Hermes. The visual appearance has been dramatically changed from a poor fragmented strip development to an attractive, enclosed layout, centred around a newly formed public realm.
Sustainability was a core principle behind the proposal and has influenced the design, form of construction and materials selected. Significant landscaping has been undertaken and a specially commissioned public art installation included to capture the public’s imagination and create a sense of place. The scheme was a finalist in the MAPIC Awards 2014 and was also shortlisted for the BCSC Gold Award 2014.
