An existing ground floor lightwell was extended into the basement to provide natural light and an outdoor terrace. A contemporary glass extension has been designed at ground floor level which overlooks the lightwell creating an extension to the kitchen, drawing light into the open living area. The new second floor extension provides a bathroom and is designed with floor to ceiling translucent glass channels on the external façade to maintain privacy from the neighboring property.

The Nicholsons Shopping Centre in Maidenhead is set to get a refurbished entrance after the Royal Borough granted planning permission last week for the Haskoll designed scheme. The refurbishment is part of Vixcroft’s ongoing work aimed at improving links between the High Street and the shopping centre. Vixcroft, a property investment firm, took over the Nicholsons Centre in March 2015. Chief executive Daniel Carter said: “Vixcroft is working with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to resolve and deliver a new quality mall, linking the Nicholsons central space to the multi-storey car park, which in turn will be redeveloped to give Maidenhead a larger and improved car park. “By connecting these vital elements, we will create a cohesive town centre. “The new entrance will be a dramatic improvement, but more importantly, it is only an element of our plans to enhance the High Street and improve integration between the High Street, the Nicholsons Centre, the planned Landings development, and the rail and Crossrail stations, which will enhance the overall attraction of Maidenhead town centre as a place to shop, live and work.”

Following the opening of the two storey, 17,700 sq ft H&M store in the Nicholsons Shopping Centre in Maidenhead in early May, centre owner and manager, Vixcroft reports that several national retailers are interested in taking units at the centre. The first of these retailers to be announced is Smiggle, the child’s stationery store, which will take a 1,200 sq ft unit on High Street Mall on a 10 year lease. Smiggle is set to open at the end of July. Commenting on H&M opening and the interest it has generated from retailers, Vixcroft, chief executive, Daniel Carter said: “This is a massive vote of confidence for the Nicholsons centre and Maidenhead. In the two weeks since H&M has opened we have seen footfall increase by 5% and we are keen to continue to attract retailers to the centre. We are in advanced negotiation with a number of well known brands and hope to confirm their presence very soon.” Nicholsons centre manager, Jane Wright added: “The opening of H&M and its trading success demonstrates the confidence retailers have in the centre and to its revitalisation.”

Last night at the ICSC European Conference in Milan, it was announced that Haskoll's project, Frederiksberg Centret (FRB.C), won the ICSC Refurbishment Award! March 2015 saw the much anticipated opening of FRB.C in Copenhagen. Haskoll, as retail layout and interior designer’s added 25 stores on a third new level, increasing the offer to 90 shops. A technically complicated project, the centre remained open for trading throughout the three year process. The owners, Danica, were delighted with the new, classic and contemporary design for the centre and the revamped vertical circulation and malls.

Derek Barker, David Leech, Jacek Webb and Robert Pearce are attending the ICSC European Conference in Milan this week and would be delighted to see you for a chat!

David Leech is one of the lecturers at the Alp Alkas Retail Real Estate Centres (aARREC) third programme. He hosted a session called “Retail Design Principles & Practices” at the Ozyegin University in April. The 20 students enjoyed an interesting discussion on how to make new and existing retail environment lively and engaging.

Planning consent has been granted for an extension to the 300,000 ft2 Royal Victoria Place shopping centre in Tunbridge Wells. The £70 million investment will see an extension that includes over 175,000 ft2 of new retail, food and leisure floorspace, including the addition of a 8 screen multiplex cinema. The design has been sensitively developed to respect the surrounding heritage context while meeting market needs that will enable Tunbridge Wells to compete as a retail destination. Haskoll's design proposals include part reconfiguration of the existing centre to introduce 5 large format retail units which are intended for fashion brands (significantly underrepresented in Tunbridge Wells at present). The proposals also introduce a significantly improved entrance for the eastern end of the town centre. This new entrance improves both pedestrian flow and legibility while also affording the introduction of a new mall with family friendly restaurant terrace. The new food and beverage offers compliment the cinema use and will significantly strengthen the towns night-time economy.

At the end of February, Haskoll Director John Geeson and Design Consultant David Lett returned from a successful visit to Kenya where they explored new leads for potential work in East Africa.
