Story

We are more than an architectural practice – we’re a team of teams with diverse and extensive expertise.  We lead projects in our unique integrated way, delivering exceptional value and a positive impact for our clients and communities.

Founded in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1953, we now have teams collaborating across the UK and internationally, with a shared commitment to our ethos of Everything architecture.

Everything architecture

Everything architecture

Our goal is simple — to improve the quality of the world around us and, in doing so, improve people’s lives. An approach embedded in the origins of Ryder which remains a touchstone today.

Everything architecture is based on principles of simplicity, usefulness and elegance. It connects people to places, from the room to the city.

It defines a responsibility to an inclusive society and to the future of our planet. It is embedded as much in pioneering science and technology as in art and is the foundation for the collective journey from the initial vision through designing and making and beyond into use — learning from each project for the benefit of the next.

Everything architecture relies on strong leadership to transcend the professional silos.  It requires talented people with a passion for collaborative project working to make a positive impact on the communities in which we work, and to deliver the best return on investment for our clients.

Our founders

Heritage

Two pioneering young entrepreneurial architects who worked with Le Corbusier and Ove Arup first met in the office of Berthold Lubetkin. In 1953, they formed Ryder and Yates in Newcastle upon Tyne. That Le Corbusier, Lubetkin and, to no less extent Newcastle born Arup, had a powerful influence on the subsequent design philosophy of Gordon Ryder and Peter Yates can still be seen in any evaluation of Ryder’s work today.

The basis for integration of architects and engineers in a single practice stemmed from the experience both Gordon and Peter enjoyed while working with these great designers. The development of the practice was relatively gradual and its success depended not only on the notion of integration but, equally, on the personalities involved and the capabilities they were able to bring to the design of an increasing range of building types.
